Garrard receives first CAS Legacy Award
Professor Mary Garrard, art, College of Arts and Sciences, was the first recipient of the CAS Legacy Award. Dean Kay Mussell presented the award to Garrard “in recognition of outstanding contributions in the classroom and to the lives of American University Students” at the Dean’s Breakfast, a reunion event, last Saturday, Oct. 19.

Garrard received the most nominations by alumni for the professor who had the greatest influence on their academic and professional lives. One nominator wrote, “It is almost impossible to communicate how privileged I feel that I had the opportunity to study under the direction of Dr. Mary Garrard during my time as an MA student at American University. She provided me with endless wisdom and encouragement and her constant demand for excellence challenged me to do the best work I am capable of. Dr. Garrard leads by example . . . in her own scholarship . . . inspiring her students . . . Dr. Garrard is an extraordinary teacher.”

Performance management moves on-line
As the university begins year three of the performance management cycle, Human Resources and e-operations launched a new tool to facilitate use of the program, the on-line Performance Management Program (PMP) worksheet. This easy-to-use on-line worksheet will replace the paper forms, saving managers and staff time and energy. This on-line worksheet offers several enhancements:

  • Staff may access their worksheet in the Notes database or, when launched, on the Web through the portal, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Additional documents, including the Competency Dictionary, planning, coaching and stop/start/continue feedback worksheets, are in the database
  • PMP department coaches can view their department’s planning and tracking source data to facilitate coaching
  • Worksheets will be “stamped” by managers at the end of each phase of the planning cycle for reference later in the performance year.
If you have questions about the database, please contact Sarah Bayne in Human Resources at 885-2730 or sbayne@american.edu or Terry Fernandez in e-operations at 885-2554 or tfernan@american.edu.
