Neither rain nor snow nor . . .

Jo Anna Hawthorne is a health fitness specialist who works for AU’s National Center for Health Fitness (NCHF). But she doesn’t spend her time at the Nebraska Avenue office. An NCHF contract with the United States Postal Service (USPS) enables Hawthorne and eight other NCHF employees to help about 400 USPS employees work out ways to get more fit. Hawthorne and the other AU employees are graduate students, all but one in the area of health and fitness.

Hawthorne offers one-on-one training and conducts about three group exercises per week. She is also the head of the yoga program. “Working out keeps you young,” she said.

While Hawthorne majored in business in college, she says her “personal obsession in her twenties was exercising. It always stuck with me. You know that old saying—do what you love and the money will follow?” Hawthorne feels fortunate that to date, she gets to do what she loves for a living.

Career goal: own my own wellness and healing center
Career influence: my sister—we share an interest in holistic health
Motivation: seeing people reach their goal; when people say, “I lost 20 pounds, and you guys helped so much.”
Life goal: my goal is just to aspire. In yoga for example, you never reach your goal—there is always room for improvement.
