Gingerbread house raffle highlights annual holiday reception

Faculty and staff are invited to get in the holiday spirit—and the spirit of giving—during AU’s annual reception, Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Bender Arena. The event, hosted by AU President Benjamin Lander and Nancy Bullard Ladner, will feature hors d’oeuvres and a gingerbread house raffle.

Partygoers are asked to bring a new and unwrapped toy for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program or a canned good for the D.C. Central Kitchen. Donations will be collected throughout the party.

Visiting Writers Series: Faculty Benefit Reading
8 p.m., Butler Board Room. This annual reading of poetry and fiction by members of AU’s creative writing faculty features Cornelius Eady, E.J. Levy, and Richard McCann. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Food and Friends, a local organization which provides meals to people with HIV and AIDS. Suggested donation is $5. Visiting Writers Series: Poetry and Psychoanalysis with Alicia Ostriker and Arlene Kramer Richards

1:30–5 p.m., Ward 1 auditorium. This conference focuses on how emotional life can block poetry and how deep psychoanalytic understanding can release the poetic mind. Ostriker will present “The Space of This Dialogue,” a paper which includes readings from her most recent book of poems, The Volcano Sequence, while Richards will present “Poetry and Psychoanalysis: A Measured Passion.” Registration is required.
