| Dec.
1 open enrollment deadline approaches
Faculty or staff
wishing to change their university health or dental coverage for
2005 must do so before the end of the open enrollment period on
Dec. 1. While the open enrollment period is of most concern to university
employees altering their coverage, employees continuing a Flexible
Spending Account (FSA) must also fill out an open enrollment form,
because FSAs require reenrollment each year. Anyone who isnt
enrolling or reenrolling in an FSA and has no other changes to their
benefits need not complete an open enrollment form.
Changes
made during the open enrollment period will take effect Jan. 1,
and show up on the Jan. 14 paycheck for staff paid biweekly and
Jan. 31 for those paid monthly. For more information on open enrollment,
or to fill out an online open enrollment form, log in to my.american.edu
and click on the 2005 Open Enrollment link in the Employment
section.

Contest
draws crowds of students to training on library research Over
a thousand students learned the skills of library research as part
of a contest that entered any student who took library training
into a contest to win an iPod and accessories.
The
contest was designed and implemented by the librarys marketing
team to attract more students to library instruction opportunities.
Students responsiveness to this contest was remarkable,
said University Librarian Pat Wand. Only about 100 students participated
in library tours or walk-in instruction sessions in September 2003,
while 300 students took tours or walk-in instruction and nearly
1,000 students learned research skills in other ways during the
contest, which ran from the beginning of fall semester to Nov. 1.
To
enter the contest, students either had to drop by a library walk-in
class, schedule and attend an office hours appointment with a reference
librarian, make a personal research appointment with a reference
librarian, or attend a library instruction session in a course scheduled
by their professor.
Eight
winners have now been chosen. Amy Shaw received the grand prize,
an iPod and accessories. The second prize, an iPod, went to Josh
Robbins. Six students won USB Pen Drives: Alexandra Codel, Daniel
Frid, Roddy Rasti, Katherine Foster, Rebecca Krichinsky, and Elizabeth
Hershman.
And
more than 1,000 other students learned more about what AUs
library has to offer. Said Wand: All students are winners
for their initiative to interact with a reference librarian and
learn more about the rich resources available to them through the
University Library. Rest

of the Thanksgiving holiday, the American Weekly will not
