Director Carl Menninger and the cast and crew of AU’s production of Into the Woods were hard at work last week, preparing for Friday’s opening at the Greenberg Theatre. The play is based on the book by James Lapine with lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim.

“The story basically takes the story of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel and ties them together with a new fairy tale about a baker and his wife who are trying to have a baby,” said Menninger, AU’s director of theatre and music theatre. “It is comedic. Obviously it’s a new take on old tales. It’s really written to illustrate how we deal with crisis, change, and conflict. How we deal with risk. The woods are kind of a metaphor for the things we have to do to shake loose from the status quo. You have to venture into something that’s a little dark and scary.”

Productions are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, and Oct. 27–29, all at 8 p.m. For ticket information, call the Greenberg Theatre at 885-2587 or visit http://american.tix.com. —MU
