| AU tops nation again for Presidential fellowships
The university has topped the nation again this year in the number of students awarded a prestigious Presidential Management Fellowship. Thirty-four finalists were selected for the competitive two-year program, which is viewed as a fast track to high-level management positions within the federal government. This is the second year in a row that AU has emerged as the nation’s top school for graduate and law students selected into the program. AU has traditionally had a great deal of success in winning fellowships and is usually ranked in the top five. “This is an important indicator of the strengths of our graduate and law students and the extraordinary work of our faculty and their programs in preparing these students for careers and leadership in the public service,” said Interim President Neil Kerwin. This year’s AU finalists include 20 from the School of International Service, seven from the School of Public Affairs, four from the Washington College of Law, two from the Kogod School of Business, and one from the School of Communication. A total of 552 finalists from more than 200 colleges and universities were selected. The program was established by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 to attract outstanding individuals from a wide variety of academic disciplines into the federal service. It seeks to draw graduate students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds into a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs. New master’s programs at Kogod
The Kogod School of Business has announced the approval of two new master’s programs set to debut this fall. The master of science in management (MSM) and master of science in accounting (MSA) will enable the school to recruit a legion of new highly qualified students with both business and nonbusiness backgrounds. Both programs are now accepting applications. “The business school took a step back and looked at the marketplace in terms of what really is needed in this area,” said Patricia Lewis, who directs the MSM program. “The core is 18 credits that really provides the underpinnings of business, IT, marketing, and management. We’ve also created the equivalent of a graduate minor. We have a lot of flexibility. It’s Kogod’s philosophy. We’re part of a greater university. We want to make certain that Kogod is not just here for business students. There are people all over society who need a business education in some form. We’re open to meet your needs, regardless of where you are in your career. Everyone needs to understand accounting, marketing, management, operations, IT.” The MSA program also will welcome students with both business and nonbusiness backgrounds. “You can have an undergraduate degree in accounting, or you could have an undergraduate business degree and this will enable you to sit for the CPA exam,” said Sue Marcum, the MSA program director. “The third person who it could attract is someone who has an undergraduate degree in a nonbusiness [field]. It’s for the whole world.” For more information on both programs, visit Kogod’s Web site at www.kogod.american.edu. Presidential Research Fellowships
In March, the Office of the Provost announced a new research support initiative for senior faculty. This new university resource, to be called the Presidential Research Fellowships, will be an internal competition coming from newly budgeted funds. The fellowships will support outstanding, high-quality scholarly, creative, and professional projects. Fellowships will be awarded annually, with all projects being eligible for funding up to $50,000. Applications for the inaugural fellowships are due in the schools on Apr. 14.
