February 20

A three-minute radio documentary takes a lot of work to create, especially when you’re a high-school-age radio novice exploring the conflicts in your life. That’s why students in WAMU’s Youth Voices project celebrated the culmination of their work and shared their finished stories at a festive listening party in the WAMU offices on Fri., Feb. 20. Story topics included intense rivalries between some African American and Latino students; role models for young black men; and an overwhelming schedule of classes and after school activities. Youth Voices began in spring 2003 to teach D.C. students how to research a topic, conduct live interviews, write radio scripts, and use editing software to produce polished stories—some of which will air on WAMU during Morning Edition the week of March 15.
