Coffee kiosk on the way
In the next two months, the library’s reserve reading room will be transformed from a underutilized and staid study area to a more lively social and intellectual center with the addition of a coffee kiosk service.

More students are getting their reserve materials online, freeing up some space for a facility that has long been requested by students. The end-of-semester “Finals Perk” events have drawn large numbers of students for free coffee. Thanks to the generous financial contributions of graduate and undergraduate student organizations and support from the library and other campus units, the dream of a daily coffee service is becoming a reality.

Initially, the service will operate in afternoons and late into the evening. A student contest will be held to name the new facility. More information will be available soon, but for now, don’t be surprised to see workers in that room as we work toward having the kiosk open later this spring.

Hundreds used library around the clock
The University Library, Bender Building was open on a 24-hour basis for several days during finals last semester. Although staffing was a challenge, students clearly appreciated the opportunity to have a quiet place to study. The library was open nonstop from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, through midnight on Friday, Dec. 17. Students were asked to sign in during extended hours. A total of 517 students were in the building during the 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. time periods. Analysis of use indicates that equal numbers were using books and computers.

Library calls for event flyers
If you have a university-sponsored event to promote, don’t forget to send your poster or flyer to the library. The bulletin board in the library lobby is designated solely for official campus events, and so your activity will get high visibility. The board is managed by staff at the library information desk, and flyers may be brought to that location.
