Meet me in Kazakhstan

School of Public Affairs professor David Lublin recently saw firsthand how wide AU’s influence reaches when he ran into some former students in Kazakhstan. Traveling at the behest of the U.S. Department of State to explain U.S. election procedures to students, journalists, and government officials in the struggling democracy, Lublin, third from left above, met with, from left, Charles Brown ’03, Assel Rustemova ’03, and Daniyar Nurskenov ’03 in Almaty to discuss their work to, as he put it, “build a new Kazakhstan both politically and economically.” Brown and Rustemova, who contacted Lublin when they saw his name on a poster promoting one of his presentations, work for the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic Research, while Nurskenov is a senior manager at the Investment Fund of Kazakhstan. “So often students graduate and you don’t ever really know what they’re doing with their education,” said Lublin. “So it’s really exciting to run into students halfway around the world and see that their experience at AU had a real impact on them and may eventually impact their country as well.” —MG
