Washington Semester alumna among Golden Globes’ brightest stars
Washington Semester alumna America Ferrera picked up a Golden Globe award earlier this week for her role as the fashion-challenged Betty Suarez in ABC’s hit comedy Ugly Betty. The show, which chronicles Betty’s adventures at top fashion rag Mode, also took home the trophy for best comedy series during Monday’s broadcast.
Ferrera, 22, participated in Washington Semester’s Peace and Conflict Resolution Seminar in spring 2004. Despite her blossoming film career—Ferrera made her silver screen debut in 2002’s Real Women Have Curves—Washington Semester dean David Brown remembers her as a down-to-earth student.
“I always felt that she was mature, humble, focused, and an intellectually serious individual,” said Brown of Ferrera, who studied international relations and theatre at the University of Southern California.
