Frederick Douglass scholars honored

The 21st annual Frederick Douglass Scholarship Dinner celebrated the academic achievement of 21 students and honored 8 others with special awards last Wednesday evening. Established in 1968, the scholarship provides full or partial tuition for culturally diverse students ranking in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Academic achievement awards went to 11 seniors (Ashley Brown, Marc Cowans, Lesley Anne Gundy, Wei Guo, Ashley Lane, Leah Parker, Nilesh Tejura, Robin Tse, Gina Walker, Brittney Williams, and Gabriel Wilson) and 10 juniors (Tyler Alvare, Justine Amos, Jennifer Arboleda, Ifigenia Flores, Patricia McClory, Melissa Miranda, Kirstyn Nimmo, Kayly Ober, Mary Pappin, and Jarryd Ritter). Rebecca Aman and Huyen Nguyen shared the outstanding sophomore award. The students honored for outstanding leadership and service were Charae Carter, Ebony Duncan, Mallory Elizondo, Shayna Hayes, Vajaah Parker, and Daphne St. Surin. —MG
