Students honored for academics and service

Stacy Aldinger has worked with the children of migrant workers in Beijing, elementary school children in southeast Washington, D.C., and women in the developing world. Along the way she has not only earned a grade point average of 4.0 and a degree in international relations, but an impressive list of awards and scholarships.

Add another one to the list. Aldinger, SIS ’07, has been named the winner of the 2007 President’s Award.

The Hawaii native will be recognized at the Honors Convocation on Saturday. So will the select group of students who will be lauded as winners of AU’s 2007 University Student Awards for Scholarship and Service and the Student Achievement Awards.

There’s Daniel Guarnera, a Truman finalist who has studied in France and pursued an interest in urban renewal through his double major at the School of Public Affairs (SPA) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). He’s capping his AU career with recognition on Saturday for two awards: a University Student Award for Outstanding Scholarship, and the Fletcher Scholar Award, which has been given annually since 1951 to a student who shows integrity, selflessness, citizenship, and academic achievement.

There’s Christina Wright, SOC, who not only bested competitors on the track field, where she produced the second-longest discus record in school history, but shone in the field of campus life as well. She was awarded the Stafford H. Cassell Award, given since 1961 for dedication to the university, energy, reliability, intellectual curiosity, friendliness, and helpfulness.

There’s Emily Caponetti, Kogod, who interned on Capitol Hill, impressed her supervisors with her initiative, and ended up working on 9/11 workers’ compensation projects and contraceptive initiatives. Caponetti, like a number of her fellow winners, has something of a history of winning awards; she also won an Alice Paul Award for her work on women’s issues.
