| Library promotes instant messaging Valentine’s Day in the library isn’t just a time to enjoy the traditional decorations in the lobby, or the festive treats, such as cinnamon fireballs. The library is also using the opportunity to get the word out about the reference services available through instant messaging. A collectible sticker and a minimarker will be part of the promotional effort. The stickers will feature a green speech bubble that echoes a speech bubble on the ALADIN home page. On the home page, that bubble serves as an online link to the various methods students and others can use to “ask a librarian” a question. This year’s sticker carries the library’s screen name and can be customized with a Valentine’s message. The minimarker also has the library screen name for instant messaging and is small enough to be carried on a key chain. It comes with a loop to enable it to be attached to a key ring or a backpack. The library has been marking Valentine’s Day with promotional events for the past several years. In 2005, students were invited to enter a prize drawing by answering the question, “What do you love about the library?” In 2006, the library gave away hundreds of stickers depicting a furry creature holding a heart with a message that advised, “Hug a librarian from the comfort of your computer.” It included the library’s screen name for instant messaging or online chat. The week of Valentine’s Day also marks the introduction of a new bookmark that describes the three easy steps for self-checkout. The library recently upgraded its self-checkout station. The new machine offers greater convenience for those who wish to check books out after midnight or avoid the occasional line at the Circulation Desk. |
