Washington College of Law’s annual Externship Fair attracted more than 130 employers to the school Thursday for the event, attended by about 400 students.

The employers, a mixture of nonprofit groups and government agencies, offered information about themselves and accepted résumés. A few even extended externship offers on the spot.

While WCL does not place students for externships, which award students credit for working with an attorney on substantive legal work for a nonprofit organization or government or court agency, it runs the fair to pair employers with students.

“This is a way for them to recruit WCL students,” said Avis Sanders, director of WCL’s externship program. “A lot of them have had good experiences with our students in the past.”

The organizations in attendance ranged from the Children’s Defense Fund to the U.S. Department of Justice to the Maryland Public Defender’s Office.
