AU observes and blogs
The Eagle, AU’s student newspaper, claimed its own corner of the blogosphere at the Democratic and Republican national conventions. Five AU students published blogs from the conventions on politics@the Eagle, the paper’s new political forum conceived and edited by Tony Romm, SOC ’09. Here are brief highlights from each blog. Read them in full at politics.theeagleonline.com.
9/3: “The convention itself was a blast. Watching Fred Thompson—especially after seeing him up close and personal earlier in the day—was interesting, and witnessing Senator Joe Lieberman’s, I-Conn., speech was a fantastic experience.”
Alex Knepper, SPA (RNC blogger)
9/1: “Some amazing things happened tonight at the convention: n I met Len Downie, Jr. and EJ Dionne! n Someone on Larry King complained that the Republican party is a bunch of white men . . . I’m not quite sure what convention they were talking about. n I infuriated a few Ron Paul supporters by asking, “Who is that?” n I saw a party that did not know its vice-presidential candidate a week ago quickly fall in love with her.”
Peter Brusoe, SPA (RNC blogger)
8/28: “Finally! The fight, emotion and unity the Democrats needed . . . emerged this Wednesday . . . More people had come for Wednesday’s speeches than any other night. By the time the soldiers took the stage, making their case against Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., there was no room at all, not even to get to a door, at the Pepsi Center.”
Kaitlin Scanlan, SOC (DNC blogger)
8/28: “In anticipation of Sen. Barack Obama’s, D-Ill., speech at Invesco Field tonight, I woke up around 5 A.M. Mountain time. For many people across the nation, tonight is an opportunity to make history. Looking back at the passing of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, the journey of the ’30s and ’40s, the life of Emmit Till, and the progress of the ’60s, this nation needs a person who has the courage to take on the issues.”
Katie Smith, SPA master’s candidate and communications coordinator, Women and Politics Institute (DNC blogger)
8/27: “Like a cleansing rain, last night’s speech changed the mood of the this convention. Hillary Clinton’s speech connected with a lot of delegates, in a way that C-SPAN couldn’t capture . . .”
Sam Hagedorn, SPA (DNC blogger)
