Beethoven Project features early sonatas
Tackling all the piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven is a tall order. He wrote a total of 32, along with nine symphonies (and part of a 10th), five piano concertos (in addition to one written at age 14), and many more string quartets, overtures, and other pieces. The 32 piano sonatas, though, are the focus of AU musician in residence Yulia Gorenman, who is working her way through the sonatas of the famed composer in a series called the Gorenman Beethoven Project. The second of eight recitals, held on Apr. 11, featured four piano sonatas from Beethoven’s early period in the mid- to late-1790s: Sonata no. 5 in C Minor, no. 6 in F Major, no. 7 in D Major, and the famed Sonata no. 8 in C Minor, also known as Pathetique.
