SOC student debuts film at D.C. festival
A stint as a movie critic in Shanghai, China, sparked Yi Chen’s fascination with film. But it was Chen’s short film that got the attention of critics at the 10th annual D.C. Independent Film Festival held at George Washington University.
Chen, a graduate student in the School of Communication’s Film and Media Arts program, debuted her film, FL324, which explores the family conflicts faced by a young Asian gay man. Chen, who will graduate in August, said it was a thrill to see her 10-minute film for the first time on the big screen.
“It was nice to see how the audience reacted and get feedback,” she said.
A crew of about 20 SOC students worked on the film, and Chen said she couldn’t have completed the project without their help and support. “I really want to thank them for everything,” she said.
Chen is currently working on her thesis screenplay, Midpoint, a drama about a man and a woman who share a haunting emotional bond, though neither is consciously aware of the other’s existence.
