James Hoge, right, editor of Foreign Affairs, presents Robert Beisner, professor emeritus of history, with the silver medal from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) for his 2006 book, Dean Acheson: A Life in the Cold War. Henry Kissinger reviewed Dean Acheson for the New York Times Book Review, and the CFR award announcement described Beisner’s book as an “expertly researched biography of one of the most influential secretaries of state in U.S. history.”

Dean Acheson offers a comprehensive look at President Harry Truman’s controversial secretary of state, who was instrumental in changing America’s role in the world and setting it on a lasting course of global engagement. “[In retirement] Bob remains one of the country’s leading diplomatic historians and this book represents a signal accomplishment,” said Robert Griffith, chair of the history department, College of Arts and Sciences.

Beisner served as president of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, is the author of several significant books, including American Foreign Relations since 1600, and served as AU history department chair from 1981 to 1990. He retired from AU in 1998.

The Council on Foreign Relations is a nonpartisan group dedicated to improving the understanding of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs. —AF
