Class President Helps Students Make Most of College Experience

Mark Stern is the recipient of the Alumni Scholarship, which was established in 1971 by the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association of American University. It provides tuition assistance to incoming freshmen who are related to an AU alum, have financial need, and have a record of academic excellence, leadership, and community service. |

The quad, where AU students catch some sun or catch up on homework, is always abuzz with activity. It’s here, on this stretch of grass, that Mark Stern, 20, says he’s most at home.
As president of the class of 2007, Stern enjoys developing activities that will foster school pride and class unity among students. He says he’s especially proud that last year’s sophomore class events, including games, service projects, and athletic activities, drew, on average, 200 students. “In the past, a turnout of 30 students was a success,” says Stern, who was also involved in student council at his high school in Montgomery, Alabama.
“Part of my job as class president is showing kids how fun it can be to go to AU,” says Stern, who was elected to serve as junior class president in the fall. “I want them to look back at their years here and think, ‘Wow, that was cool.’”
The public communications major, whose minors are marketing and philosophy, also volunteers as an AU ambassador for the admissions office, where he helps with freshman orientation and hosts perspective students. “It’s all about helping them make the transition from high school to college and making them feel welcome on campus,” he explains.
Stern, whose sister E.J. also attended AU and served as her class president, isn’t sure yet about his career path. Law school is a possibility, as is a position in business.
“I have so many interests, I have so many interests” he laughs. “Whatever I do, though, I want to work with people and help set a direction for the group. I thrive [on] interacting with others.”
