Kogod Student Has Designer Dreams

Lauren Gibson is the recipient of the Southern Management Corporation Scholarship, which is granted annually to a student in the Kogod School of Business who has been accepted to AU as a junior transfer student from Prince George’s Community College.
It was established in 1992 by David and Suzanne Deeds Hillman, BS/KSB/1979, parents of Richard Hillman, BSBA/Kogod/1993.

Lauren Gibson’s passion for fashion blossomed at age 13 when she became intrigued by the glossy photo spreads in such fashion magazines as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

“I always wanted to be the person who put those layouts together,” says Gibson, 20. “I’m not skilled at designing, though, so I thought, ‘Why not go into the marketing side of things?’ I’m definitely drawn to the more creative side of business.”

An international marketing major in the Kogod School of Business, Gibson aspires to work one day for such iconic designers as Armani, Valentino, or Dior. “My degree will have prepared me to sell clothes in France, Italy, and all over the world,” says Gibson with gusto.

In fall 2004, Gibson transferred to AU from Prince George’s Community College, where she says the courses laid the foundation for the more challenging business concepts she’s tackling at Kogod.

“It wasn’t a hard transition. All of the teachers and advisors at AU have been really helpful. They just want to make sure I’m successful,” says Gibson, who would like to teach English in Japan for a year after graduation, before heading to graduate school.

And while Gibson, who is a member of Barkada, the AU Filipino club, is making the most of her college experience, she says she enjoys living near her Landover, Maryland, family.

“It’s nice, I can still take my laundry home on weekends.”
