SPA receives $600,000 gift

A $600,000 gift from the estate of Paul H. and Isabella Clarke, longtime Washington area residents, is one of the largest in the School of Public Affairs’ 71-year history. It provides an endowed scholarship to benefit SPA undergraduate and graduate students.

“The Clarke’s generosity will help us in providing financial assistance to many strong students in the years ahead, [assuring] that the next generation of public affairs’ leaders is drawn from all sectors of society based on individual achievement,” said Dean William LeoGrande.

Isabella Clarke established the scholarship in memory of her son and husband. Her son, Paul A. Clarke, attended AU from 1965 to 1969 and studied at SPA (then known as SGPA). He served as chief of staff to U.S. Representative Bobbi Fiedler (R-Calif.), who later became his wife. Paul A. Clarke died in 1996 at age 50.

Isabella Clarke’s husband, Paul H. Clarke, who died in 1997, worked for the State Department for 19 years before retiring in 1970 as chief of the special assignment staff. He also worked at the U.S. Information Agency and the Peace Corps.

Before her death in 2004, Isabella Clarke worked for more than 18 years for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland.

The first scholarship will be awarded for the 2006–07 academic year to a student studying government, public administration, or justice.
