Don’t Forget the Boss

I had to write a note in response to the memorable “In Closing–September 30, 1972” piece in the fall 2007 American magazine.

The piece brought back special memories of days protesting the war on Ward Circle, but mostly of enjoying the free music with roommates and friends during all the concerts. However, one band was left out. Bruce Springsteen played in Leonard Gym for (I think) $2.50 a ticket sometime during 1973. His band was very new and he was very young (like we were), but everyone knew that history was being made that day. That was the same year his album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. was released, and then he recorded his second album entitled The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle later during 1973.

Thanks for taking care of the Baby Boomers with this piece remembering Chicago, the Dead, the Allman Brothers, Sha Na Na, the Byrds, John Sebastian, Little Richard, and even Procul Harem.

Personal Touch

I was thrilled to receive my copy of American magazine with Dr. Neil Kerwin on the cover. Kudos to the committee that selected him for this position.

During my senior year in high school, I visited American with a group of prospective political science honors students. Dr. Kerwin and his wife invited us to their home for dinner. What I remember most was his down-to-earth nature coupled with an excitement for academics. After my weekend in D.C., I decided that AU was the place for me.

During my years at AU, I had two classes with Dr. Kerwin: one as an undergraduate and one as a graduate student. I can tell you that the prospect of taking a summer night class in administrative law toward my MPA while working full time didn’t thrill me. However, Dr. Kerwin’s teaching style and extensive knowledge made the class one of the best of my graduate school experience.

With Dr. Kerwin at the helm, AU can only achieve great things. Thanks for promoting a fellow alum and an eminently qualified one at that.

Congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Kerwin.
